NURSING HOMES
There are 350,000 "adverse drug events" at nursing homes in the U.S. each year; half of these are preventable, and many are serious or life-threatening. Forty percent of nursing homes certified by the Health Care Financing Administration repeatedly failed to meet basic health and safety standards. Almost 40 percent of psychiatric services provided in nursing homes are unnecessary, lacking in psychiatric documentation, or questionable. Maybe the people running the nursing homes (and the Health Care Financing Administration) are the ones who need the psychiatric services. |
NURSING HOMES, WORKING IN
Employees in nursing homes are more likely to be injured than people working in coal mines or manufacturing plants, with lost-time injury and illness rates reaching twice the U.S. average. A large proportion of these injuries could probably be prevented byteaching the employees to stop calling the patients "we" in that funny tone of voice. |
NUTS
A study of cases in which children were hospitalized for choking on small objects found that nuts were the food most likely to result in injury (narrowly edging out plastic dinosaurs, VCR parts, and Mommy's earring). |
