Cynical Activities - I

INCENSE
Does incense help you meditate? Not any more, it won't. Incense fumes contain chemicals that are associated with lung, bladder, skin, and scrotal cancers, thus doing bad things to several of your chakras. Ommmmm. |
INCINERATORS
Incinerators used to dispose of municipal wastes produce large amounts of toxic ash and release heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, and chromium) as well as chemicals such as dioxins into the environment. If you live near an incinerator, or even if you just eat food crops that have been grown too near an incinerator, you can end up with increased cancer rates, respiratory ailments, reproductive abnormalities, and plenty of other health effects. |
INDIA
Next stop on our wonderful world tour: the ashrams, the Taj Mahal, the Ganges, the bacteria...In that study, 41 percent of the tourists who traveled to India got sick. |
INFANT CARRIERS
Get a babysitter and leave the kid at home. During 1999,12,820 children under the age of five were injured in falls from infant carriers and car seats.I |
INFLUENZA
More scary information you can't do anything with: if you have the flu during the second trimester of pregnancy, there's an increased risk that your child will someday suffer from schizophrenia. |
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
In the U.S., the pressure of mastering the information technology revolution is one of the main causes of the high rates of depression, stress, and burnout in the workplace. This is known as "progress." |
INSECTICIDES
Maybe you should start learning to love your mosquito bites. Using insecticides in the home may double your risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Automatic insecticide dispensers used in restaurants and other businesses have been linked to illnesses such as sore throats, headaches, dizziness, irritation of the eyes and lungs, nausea, and diarrhea. |
INTELLIGENCE, HIGH
Don't be too pleased If you find out your kid's a genius. Children with high intelligence may become bored, tune out, underachieve, become depressed, feel alienated from their classmates, be targeted for teasing, or be incorrectly diagnosed as hyperactive. |
INTELLIGENCE, LOW
On the other hand, don't celebrate if your kid's not the brightest pixie in the forest, either. Children with low IQs are more likely to be delinquent teens and criminal adults, and they die sooner. People with lower intelligence are more likely to get Alzheimer's and to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder if they have a traumatic experience. |
INTENSIVE CARE
A study has found that one-fifth of people who died in an intensive care unit had been misdiagnosed, and that in 44 percent of these cases, a correct diagnosis would have resulted in different treatment. (The medical term for this is "D'oh!") If they put you on a mechanical ventilator in the ICU, you have one chance in ten of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia. |
