EPILEPSY DRUGS
The drugs women take to control epilepsy can make oral contraceptives less effective and increase the risk of birth defects. |
ERASERS
The usual danger of erasers is that sooner or later your four-year-old will stuff one up his nose, but the consequences could be even nastier than you expect. People may experience rashes, asthmatic attacks, orother allergic reactions to the latex of which some Erasererasers are made. |
ESTROGEN, NOT TAKING
You women know about your bones getting brittle if you don't take estrogen, but if you're post-menopausal with a hard-driving,
Type-A personality, not taking estrogen also increases your risk of heart problems. It's a bad combination: you could end up with a heart attack from breaking your hand while punching out your stupid boss. |
ESTROGEN, TAKING
On the other hand, taking estrogen may increase your risk of uterine, breast, and ovarian cancer. Stay young. |
EXERCISE
Nowadays, there are only three things left that we believe in with total, unquestioning, evangelistic faith: exercise, sunscreen, and drinking eight glasses of water a day. So brace yourself: we're about to shatter one-third of the Holy Trinity. People who get lots of exercise are less likely to live into old age. If you somehow get as far as your fifties, lots of exercise may lead to memory loss or premature senility. |
EXERCISE, ISOMETRIC
And if you think isometrics are the kinder, gentler way to fitness, think again. Isometric exercise produces sudden increases in blood pressure that can be risky, especially if you have cardiovascular weakness or disease. |
EXERCISE, NOT GETTING
All you couch potatoes can stop snickering now. Lack of exercise and obesity contribute to up to a third of cancers of the colon, breast, kidney, and digestive tract. Depressed people who don't exercise are more likely to have their depressions recur after treatment. Walking between the fridge and the remote control doesn't count. |
EYES, LIGHT-COLORED
People with light-colored eyes may be more likely to get meningitis and to become deaf as a result. |
EYESIGHT, NORMAL
And who thought of looking for this? Women with normal eyesight are twice as likely as blind women to develop breast cancer. |
