CALCIUM, NOT TAKING
Don't let your kids go without calcium! Children and teenagers who consume too little calcium may end up with osteoporosis later in life.
CALCIUM, TAKING
Don't let your kids take calcium! If they do, the lead that may be mined along with the calcium could give them lead poisoning, which can result in cardiovascular and kidney disease. The high levels of calcium taken by people undergoing kidney dialysis may lead to heart disease.
CAMPING
No more happy campers. Campers in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys and southeastern states may be exposed to blasto-mycosis, a potentially fatal disease that can present as acute pneumonia or can affect the skin, bones, and genitourinary tract.
CANCER CURES
So-What's-the-Alternative? Department (continued): children who survive cancer face six times the normal risk of getting new cancers in early adulthood as a result of the treatments that cured them. Men who are cured of testicular cancer by certain forms of chemotherapy have a heightened risk of heart and kidney problems later on (most men, however, have absolutely no problem with this trade-off). Long-term use of a drug widely used for treating breast cancer may cause cancer of the womb and increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Chemotherapy can have long-term negative effects on memory and the ability to concentrate. Of people whose cancers are cured by bone marrow transplants, 5 to 20 percent develop chronic kidney failure.
CANDLES
Ditch those romantic candlelit dinners. Each year, candles are involved in an average of 6,800 home fires, resulting in ninety deaths and losses of $74 million.
CAREGIVING
It's true: caring, altruistic people do get to heaven faster whether they want to or not. If you're caring for a sick or disabled spouse, you're more likely to die than people not caring for a spouse. If you're caring for a family member with Alzheimer's, you could reactivate latent herpes infections or suffer from depression; and if your spouse dies from this condition, you can be left with decreased energy and enthusiasm for as long as three years. Caring for a schizophrenic can lead to catching colds or other infectious diseases.
CARPENTER, BEING A
Save a carpenter: buy plastic furniture. The dust produced while making furniture, cabinets, and other wood products can lead to cancer of the nasal cavities and sinuses.
CARPET-LAYER, BEING A
Save a carpet-layer: stick to wooden floors. Carpet-layers may suffer from a variety of knee symptoms and conditions, including bursitis or skin infections, as well as fluid buildup requiring aspiration.
CARPETS
The paranoiacs were right all along: your carpet is trying to kill you. Carpets are likely to contain dangerous levels of dust, including pesticides, carcinogens, and heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury.
CARROTS
Having good night vision may not be worth it: smokers who eat carrots increase their chances of lung cancer.
